Volunteer Scholarship Reader Opportunity

The Lane Community Foundation has been awarding almost one million dollars in scholarships to our students each academic year.

We rely on a caring, dedicated team of individuals to help us review student applications. This is a meaningful volunteer opportunity and our readers truly enjoy the process.

All reviewers are required to attend one orientation & training session, in person, at Lane Community College's main campus located in Eugene, Oregon. Because of this requirement, volunteers are typically residents of Lane County. Employees of Lane Community College are not eligible for this specific volunteer opportunity

What To Expect

  • Review online applications from your home, on your own schedule!
  • Access online applications with PC or MAC computers.

  • Orientations provide instructions for using the online software and our review criteria.

Which of the following were you involved with?

Our volunteer readers are assigned 40-50 online applications that take approximately 25-30+ hours to review and score during the month of April. Our review process is structured to provide each applicant with a fair and consistent review.

We need volunteers that will commit to completing these assignments. If you are accepted to our team of scholarship readers, will you honor this commitment?

Conflict of Interest

Lane Community College Foundation believes that it is important for scholarship readers to avoid the appearance of a conflict of interest while reviewing applications and conducting any other selection committee business. Readers must be able to score and rate applicants without potential or perceived influence caused by a conflict of interest. Readers must evaluate the eligibility of applicants without bias and make their ratings based on the established objective criteria.

A conflict of interest can occur when an action of a reader or donor results in a direct financial benefit to a person closely related to the donor or reader. A conflict of interest may also occur if a reader scores the applicant without considering objective criteria for the scholarship.

  1. No readers or members of the scholarship selection committee shall be eligible to apply for assistance from the scholarship fund.
  2. If a family member of a reader or member of the scholarship selection committee has
applied for assistance, that person will declare a conflict of interest and will not participate during their review and selection process. (“Family member” is defined as spouse, parent, child, stepchild, adopted child, sibling, niece, nephew, grandchild, step grandchild, or in- law.)
  3. Readers must also declare a conflict of interest if they have a direct business relationship with an applicant or immediate family member of an applicant; or if the applicant is a friend or close associate.
  4. Current Lane students (or those graduating in the past 24 months), Lane faculty and staff are not eligible to review scholarships.
